After PDAC 2024: A Mining Perspective

A Changing Mindset

Mining can no longer be a unidirectional investment. It must be connected to the concept of intergenerational sustainable development. This means building relationships with local communities and integrating people into the production process, ensuring a long-term vision beyond short-term profit.

Social Geology

I like to frame this perspective within what I call “Social Geology”—a branch of geology that is less technical and more human. Today, mining projects are no longer evaluated only through economic feasibility, but also through social and environmental sustainability.

The Reality of Complexity

If a community rejects a project, or if environmental risks are too high, forcing development becomes both unethical and economically unsustainable. True feasibility must include social acceptance and environmental responsibility.

Responsible Mining Principles

Through VUELTA MINING ATTITUDE, I promote responsible sourcing strategies based on three fundamental principles:

• Economically viable
• Socially inclusive
• Environmentally effective

Beyond the Mine

A conscious mining project should generate value beyond its operational boundaries. When developed sustainably, a mine becomes a driver of social and environmental impact, creating opportunities across the entire value chain—from local communities to end consumers.

A Shared Perspective

In the mineral supply chain, there is no true progress without dialogue between upstream and downstream. Each side must reflect the needs, identities and human realities of the other.

A Personal Reflection

I am grateful to all the professionals I met during PDAC 2024. More than anything else, this experience represented a moment of personal growth.
