A New Milestone

I’m pleased to share that I have obtained a new certification in Impact Investment®. The course was organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Understanding Impact Investment

Monitoring investments across financial, social and environmental dimensions is essential to fully understand and enhance their contribution to the host economy. Impact investing refers to investments made into companies, organizations and funds with the intention of generating measurable social and environmental impact alongside a financial return.

Why It Matters for Mining

I chose to explore this topic because I see a strong connection with the challenges of the mining sector, particularly in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). In a global race for critical minerals, increasing pressure on local communities risks amplifying social inequalities instead of reducing them. In this context, impact investment can offer a strategic approach to address these dynamics.

Creating Shared Value

It becomes essential to generate shared value throughout the life cycle of a mine by optimizing the entire value chain. This means adopting a mining model that places human value at its core—demonstrating that investments can create meaningful impact when they are people-centered in both management and operations.

A Sector Full of Untapped Potential

Impact investing has grown significantly in recent years, with more investors prioritizing positive outcomes alongside financial returns. However, within the ASM sector, examples remain limited. Many investors still lack the tools and understanding needed to engage with complex and often untested models.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

I strongly believe that impact investment can transform ASM operations into productive systems capable of generating tangible social and environmental benefits. From local communities to end consumers, this approach has the potential to create value across the entire supply chain—turning existing challenges into shared opportunities.

A Personal Reflection

This experience reinforced my belief that impact investing is a powerful tool to unlock opportunities in sectors that often struggle to access financial capital. It also aligns deeply with the principles of geological mining that have always guided me: true wealth is not defined by money, but by the opportunities we create.

Acknowledgment

I would like to thank UNIDO for providing not only valuable knowledge on impact investment, but also an important step forward in my professional development.
